Week 2

The social conflict paradigm is a system based off of social inequality; each part of society benefits some categories of people more than others. Inequality leads to social change. Social change refers to any alterations of behavior, cultural values or social norms. Now you may not totally be aware of these alterations of behavior, cultural values or social norms because you fail to see them. We see the world as we are not by what we see. We turn a blind eye to a lot of what is going on around us unless it involves us. When people notice those changes sometimes they lead to social movements which is an organized effort at claims making that tries to shape the way we think about an issue in order to encourage social change. There are four stages within a social movement: 1. Emergence which means coming together 2. Coalescence which means others join in and the movement grows 3. Formalization which means the movement becomes established as an organization 4. Decline which means goes till it quits. They don't have to go in order sometimes things happen out of order but generally all 4 things must occur to have a social movement. Awareness of a movement does not equal prevalence because as awareness goes up prevalence goes down.

Social Media can help but also hurt a social movement. Some counties block some media so they citizens can't see what is going on. But sometimes social media can bring people together to fight for the same thing. People from around the world can join the fight through social media.
