week 5

In our society we discover intersectionality which is the intersection and interaction between our master statuses. Master statuses are statuses or roles a society views as important and treats us according to our statuses. There are many different status such as gender, race, age, class/education, sexual orientation, disability, religion, looks, nationality/citizenship, country, and occupation. Statuses that are given at birth or involuntary are ascribed statuses. Ascribed statuses could be religion, class, race, and nationality. Statuses we work on and achieve are achieved statuses. Those statuses can be looks, class/education, occupation, and sexual orientation. With that comes privilege which is unearned, ascribed better treatment that accesses opportunity. Oppression is unearned, ascribed harsh treatment with fewer opportunities.

In the video it talks about how people rank by their memberships such as class, race, etc. Intersectionality creates a untied us vs them. People are so united by their intersectionality they don't pay attention to the other terrible things happening around them.
